Is Cove home security worth the cost?

Cove is a build-your-own home security system with devices ranging from around $15–$250 apiece. But we found the company’s equipment to be among the most affordable in the market due largely to the fact that Cove offers frequent sales that slash its prices by as much as 60%. With its budget-friendly equipment and affordable monitoring plans, we found it to be a good option for those looking for a deal on their home security system.

Cove doesn’t tie its customers into long-term contracts, so you have a couple of options when purchasing its equipment. You can pay for equipment up front, which can range from as little as $200 to around $500 depending on what you choose to include in the system and whether you purchase the equipment on sale.

You can also choose to go with the company’s Pay Later or Pay Never plan. With this plan, you agree to either maintain a service plan with Cove for at least 36 months or pay for the equipment if you cancel early (1).

Cove doesn’t offer self-monitoring, so you’ll need to subscribe to either Cove Basic ($17.99 per month) or Cove Plus ($27.99 per month). You can choose to either install Cove yourself or pay a fee of $99 for a professional installation.

How Cove stacks up on value

Cove has a DIY price with a professional look and feel—making it a unicorn of sorts in the home security industry.

At Helpful, we look at value both from upfront and monthly costs, but we also consider if what you’re getting for the price is truly worth it. When we tried Cove, we found the equipment to be of much higher quality than other DIY brands, but with a similar price tag. And although the monthly cost of premium monitoring is a bit higher than many competitors, it’s far lower than high-end brands such as Vivint and ADT.

Cove may not have the name recognition of those professionally installed companies, or even fellow DIYers like SimpliSafe or Ring, but when we asked ourselves, “was what we paid what we got?” we were pleasantly surprised by the answer, and felt that it stacks up extremely well in such a crowded market.
