Who are Sling TV’s competitors?
Sling competes with other live TV streaming services, including pricier options like Hulu+ Live TV and YouTube TV, though these services will give you more local channels. Meanwhile, Philo is another low-cost live TV streaming option, but it doesn’t have any sports, news, or local channels. Instead, you’ll get more Hallmark movies, westerns, and indie films.
Sports fans looking for more than the basics should check out DIRECTV STREAM. You’ll spend $50–$120 more each month, depending on the plan you choose, but you’ll get unlimited DVR storage. And you’ll more than double your channel count, because DIRECTV STREAM’s lowest-tier plan comes with 75 of them.
Taking your shows on the road?
Watching live TV on the go with Sling is a decent experience. You can record an unlimited number of live shows at a time, but you’ll probably hit the included 50 hours of DVR storage pretty quickly. Just opt for the $5 monthly upgrade to 200 hours, and you’re good to go.
Watching on-demand content was a little harder. When we started a show at home and jumped to another device partway through, playback tended to get glitchy. Both the app and the website sometimes had trouble keeping track of our progress, and sometimes we got a playback error until we jumped back to the last device we used.
