Is Philo worth the cost?

Philo is one of the cheapest live TV streaming services we found. It's a great choice if you're primarily interested in family, lifestyle, movies, and entertainment programming. You can’t get local networks or sports, but you get access to all the Hallmark channels, HGTV, and Lifetime without paying add-on fees. You also get Nickelodeon, Nicktoons, and TeenNick. Philo is a great deal if its library matches your personal taste and household needs.

How to cancel or reactivate

It’s easy to cancel your Philo subscription online. You’ll be taken through a few screens asking if you want to cancel, but all you have to do is confirm. You’ll get access to the service through the end of your billing cycle or free trial.

Philo is easy to reactivate, too. The service lets you pick up right where you left off, and your new billing cycle will start on the day you reactivate.

Add-ons and tiered plans

You’ll pay less for add-ons options with Philo, but the selection is extremely limited. You have three options:

  • Movies & More: $3/mo.
    • FMC
    • HDNet Movies
    • Reelz
    • Sony Movies
  • STARZ: $9/mo.
  • MGM+: $6

These add-on prices are lower than we found with competing TV providers across the board, but there’s no way to get HBO, Cinemax, SHOWTIME, foreign language channels, or sports packages.

Compatible devices

You can find the Philo app on Android devices, Android TV, Apple TV, Fire TV, iOS, Roku, and Playstation. TV Everywhere works on those devices as well. Philo works best on Amazon and Roku devices, according to our experience and the dozens of user reviews we parsed. It’s not quite as good on Apple devices (you can’t use Chromecast from the iOS apps), but you can find workarounds without too much trouble.

To watch in 1080p, the best available resolution, you’ll need access to internet speeds of at least 13 Mbps. For most modern internet connections, that should be no trouble at all.

Free trial

Philo offers a free trial of its services for seven days, and we love that your access continues throughout that period even if you cancel. You will have to enter credit card information, but that’s pretty common for free trials these days. Each of the add-ons also comes with a free seven-day trial.
