Is Frontpoint worth the cost?

Frontpoint’s preselected equipment bundles start at around $400, which is higher than many of its DIY competitors. However, it frequently slashes its prices by 50% or more, so chances are, you’ll be able to find a competent system for around a couple hundred dollars.

If you choose to build your own package, you’ll start with the Frontpoint hub for around $100, and then add sensors (around $25 a piece), motion detectors (around $50), and cameras (ranging from around $75 to $200). If you’re enthusiastic about building your own package, it’s going to add up quickly, so we recommend checking out Frontpoint’s bundles—especially if they’re on sale.

If you need only the basics, “The Starter Pack” is just over $100 when on sale and includes a hub, keypad, motion sensor, door/window sensor, and yard sign and stickers. “The Home Shield,” which we tested, is about double the price of the base package. It includes everything “The Starter Pack” does, plus two extra door/window sensors, a smoke/heat detector, a flood sensor, and an indoor camera. Its most expensive plan, “The Family Lookout,” is typically around $350 when on sale. It has everything “The Home Shield” does, plus a doorbell camera and keychain remote. In our book, if you can get this extensive of a home security system for less than $400, you’re getting a real bargain.

How Frontpoint stacks up on value

A rising DIY home security market means competitive pricing all around. Unless you’re opting for a professionally installed system from companies like ADT and Vivint, you can probably get a solid home security system for around a few hundred dollars. Frontpoint is no exception to that general rule.

What separates Frontpoint from its fellow DIYers is its high cost of professional monitoring. Most competitors offer professional monitoring services for around $25, while Frontpoint’s is typically double that amount. And if you're looking for a free self-monitoring option, you’re out of luck and should consider other options like Ring, or Abode. SimpliSafe also offers self-monitoring at a low cost.

Cancelation costs for Frontpoint

There are no cancelation fees for Frontpoint, but if you finance your equipment, you’ll be on the hook for any unpaid balance. It also offers a 30-day free trial. If you’re unhappy with the service, you can call (855)705-5071 to cancel and get a full refund. The company will even cover the cost for you to ship the equipment back. Users can cancel Frontpoint's professional monitoring anytime with no cancelation fees.

Unlike other home security brands that allow users to cancel their service online, Frontpoint requires you to call customer service, which may be challenging due to its common upselling attempts. Be ready to turn down aggressive retention offers once connected to a representative on the phone.
