ADT is the OG of the home security space—but as technology and consumer preferences have evolved, it’s far from your only choice. ADT not only compares to expensive, professionally installed brands such as Vivint, but it also faces stark competition from DIY stalwarts such as SimpliSafe, Ring, and even its own DIY alternative, ADT Self Setup.
Consider ADT and Vivint as wearing the proverbial crown of the home security industry. They both require professional installation, and their high price tags usually translate to a contract (although with Vivint, it’s not required).
But there are crucial differences that consumers should be aware of as they choose between the two. Vivint’s devices are proprietary, while ADT’s are white-labeled. This means that whereas Vivint’s own security and smart-home devices work incredibly well together, you won’t be able to pair many third-party devices with it. Though ADT can’t say it makes its own equipment, it can say that it’ll work seamlessly with many other systems.
SimpliSafe is a well-known DIY home security brand. While ADT requires you to choose a package, sign a contract, and face a high monthly bill, SimpliSafe is highly customizable at a low cost and with no contracts.
SimpliSafe and ADT both offer solid smart-home pairing and reliable professional monitoring. But bear in mind that you’ll need to install SimpliSafe yourself and that it doesn’t carry quite the same weight from a reputation perspective.
Ring is well-known for its doorbell cameras, but it also carries a good selection of home security equipment. As opposed to ADT’s professional-installation requirement, you can install Ring yourself with few headaches and at a much lower cost. ADT’s equipment is manufactured by a third party and relies heavily on Google Nest products, whereas Ring creates its own tech. Both pair extremely well with third-party smart home systems and devices.
ADT Self Setup is ADT Pro Install’s DIY alternative. But they’re not exactly apples-to-apples. While both mostly comprise white-labeled devices manufactured by Honeywell and Alarm.com and integrate seamlessly with Google Nest devices, the traditional ADT service is far more robust (and costly).
